Recognizing the need for a well-trained workforce in the construction industry, the Construction Industry Education Foundation (CIEF) founded an annual Design Build Competition in 1986 in Sacramento, CA. The event was designed to promote career awareness and create a fun learning experience for high school students. In 1989, the Home Builders Council and the Building Industry Association of Southern California founded the Design Build Southern California Competition.
Following defined criteria, schools are provided architectural plans to build a 6-foot by 8-foot structure. Construction of the structures takes place at the competition site over a two-day period. A panel of architectural and construction professionals from across California serve as judges. The construction community provides all of the materials needed for each team participating in the competition to complete their project. Schools may keep their completed project and use it themselves or they may sell it to fund other school projects. Many projects in recent years have been donated to regional nonprofit organizations.
